LEARNING A PERIOD OF LIFE OR A WAY OF LIFE

Some view education as a period of life instead of a way of life. That is why only one-third of all adults read an entire book after their last graduation.

Education gives us knowledge of the world around us and changes it into something better. It develops in us a perspective of looking at life. It helps us build opinions and have points of view on things in life. People debate over the subject of whether education is the only thing that gives knowledge. “Education is not preparation for life, education is life itself”. John Dewey was convinced that learning through doing was the best approach to education. For Dewey. ” Experience is defined as that which people think and perceive through the senses and then act upon”.

The word Education is derived from the Latin word “Educare”. Education is measured by the growth of a student into a true human being and a perfect man, not merely by the marks scored. Education tries to develop creativity and inspires relationships. Education gives life meaning, purpose, wholeness, and peace.

Dewey believed that human beings learn through a “hands-on approach. This places Dewey in the educational philosophy of pragmatism. Pragmatists believe that reality must be experienced. From Dewey’s educational point of view, this means that students must interact with their environment to adapt and learn.

“Continuous learning is essential for lifetime growth. You can have a great deal of experience and be no smarter for all the things you’ve done, seen, and heard. Experience alone is no guarantee of lifetime growth. But if you regularly transform your experience into new lessons, you will make each day of your life a source of growth. The smartest people are those who can transform even the smallest events or situations into breakthroughs in thinking and actions. Look at all of life as a school and every experience as a lesson, and your learning will always be greater than your experience”. —Dan Sullivan and Catherine Nomura–

  1. I completely agree that learning cannot be confined to a period of life — it is, in fact, a way of life. The moment we stop learning, we stop growing. As Dewey said, learning through interaction with our environment is vital, and this reminds me of the ancient Indian Gurukul system, where students learned not only from scriptures but also through observation, participation, and real-life experiences. Education then was not about degrees but about shaping one’s character and understanding life in its totality. True learning, I believe, continues as long as we stay curious.
