Do you think we’re shaped more by our experiences or by who we are?
Nature: The Biological Foundation
Nature refers to the biological and genetic traits passed down by parents. It establishes the baseline for our physical traits, cognitive limits, and innate temperaments.
Nurture: The Environmental Factor
Nurture encompasses the environmental factors that impact who we are. This includes our early childhood experiences, the way we were raised, our social relationships, and the surrounding culture.
The nature-nurture question asks how much nature (genetic factors) and how much nurture (environmental factors) contribute to a person’s biological, emotional, cognitive, personal, and social development
Today, researchers no longer focus on which is more important, nature or nurture, but rather on how nature and nurture interact to influence and regulate our behaviors (Reiss, 2000)
So back to the question…Do you think we are shaped more by our experiences or by who we are?
I believe our experiences are shaped by environmental factors such as parenting style, social environments, and our relationships with people and their communities. Then, who we are also is our biological makeup, our genetics, the traits we are born with and inherited from our parents, which can be genetic disease, hair color, eye color, skin color, temperament, etc.
Our experiences, or who we are alone, can not shape or determine what or whom a person will become. Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory bridges nature and nurture through an interactionist model. He argued that innate biological drives (nature) provide the unconscious force, while early childhood experiences and parenting (nurture) shape how those drives are expressed, ultimately determining our adult personality.
So this explains everything, our innate biological drives (who we are) provide the unconscious force, while childhood experiences, parenting, which are the environmental factors, shape how those drives are expressed, ultimately determining our general adult personality.
So, nature and nurture combined shape an individual; one cannot do without the other. So our experiences of life in general determine how our innate dispositions are expressed.

Nature may give us the starting point, but life teaches us how to use it. Both shape the journey. 👏😊
I agree with you 💯. Thank you for your thoughtful words
Welcome, bro.
Beautifully articulated; we are both born and continually becoming. 🤍
This is one of those questions that has no simple answer, and that’s what makes it so fascinating. Have you ever experienced something that completely changed the way you see yourself or the world? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
I believe both nature and nurture play important roles. We may be born with certain traits, but our experiences, relationships, and choices shape how those traits develop. What do you think has influenced you the most—your upbringing, your experiences, or your personality?
