My Mother’s Lesson That Changed the Way I Think Forever

What’s a lesson you’ve learned recently that shifted your perspective?

We learn every day. We learn through hard times, through easy times, through struggles, and through curiosity. In fact, life is a learning process, and we are the students.

But the most important lesson is the one we gained when our mindset shifted towards personal growth and development.

I remembered an incident that happened years ago. There was a particular food that my mother and I were discussing one day, and I told her I didn’t know how to prepare it. My mother didn’t say another word, but there was this look she gave me, and I knew something was on her mind.

A lesson that changed my perspective.

So that same week, she bought all the ingredients needed for that food, and I will be learning how to prepare it that day. She was there in the kitchen with me, directing and guiding me all the way, and the food came out very delicious 😋.

“It’s better not to do something because you choose not to… than because you don’t know how.”

So later that day, my mother told me the reason she did what she did is because she doesn’t like it when any of her daughters would say they don’t know how to cook any food or do a particular thing. You see that word, “I can’t,” is not a word in my mother’s dictionary. One thing she said that stood out for me was that it is better not to do anything because you choose not to do it or you feel like not doing it than the reason you don’t want to do it is that you don’t know how to do it”

So why am I telling this story? It is because of what my mother taught me that day and the lesson I learned shifted my mindset to a whole different perspective. It made me realize that whatever we say we can do, we will do it. And whatever we say we can’t do, we definitely won’t be able to do it.

The word, I can’t, has a fullstop to it. It consciously and subconsciously tells your mind that you can’t do anything, and whatever your mind has registered that you can’t do, so will it be.

The lesson I learned that day contributed to the person I am and who I am becoming today. I try my best not to use the word “I can’t” instead I will ask, how can I do this?  Or I will look for who can assist me or teach me how to do it.

No one knows it all, but it is good to know a little detail of everything, know how to cook, clean, organize, and nurture, because as a human being, these are all survival skills you must have if you truly want to navigate life. 😊
